Synthetex is the manufacturer of HYDROTEX fabric formworks for the in-situ casting of concrete mattresses.
Referred to as fabriform or fabric-formed concrete, HYDROTEX fabric forms are used to cast concrete revetments that permanently control, remediate, prevent, and protect against erosion, scour, and liner damage.
It’s versatile, easy to install, and 100% permanent.
How is HYDROTEX used for permanent erosion control and scour protection?
The Problem
Erosion can happen anywhere—at bridges, rivers, canals, and even landfills. Unless permanently controlled, erosion can result in thousands of dollars in repair and maintenance costs.
The Solution
Use HYDROTEX fabric formworks (fabriform) to cast a concrete erosion control system. The geotextile fabric forms are delivered to the site rolled-up and unpumped, minimizing freight costs.
Once delivered, lay out the fabric on the ground and pump with fine aggregate concrete. The result is an engineered revetment mattress that conforms to the soil and provides thorough erosion protection. No maintenance is required, and no heavy or complicated machinery is needed to install it in place.

Do I Need Permanent Erosion Control?
Permanent erosion control is applicable in virtually any environment and market.
If you are working on a project with steep slopes and areas subject to high-velocity flows, then a permanent erosion control product would be the best way to minimize soil loss.
Examples include; channel lining, canal lining, ditch lining, embankment protection, and shoreline revetment.
If you are unsure about whether you require erosion control at all, our engineers would be happy to take a look at your project and prescribe a solution. Give us a call at 1-800-253-0561 for a consultation.
Permanent Erosion Control Options
There are a few options to consider when looking for permanent erosion control.
These include; permanent erosion control fabrics, blankets, permanent soil reinforcement mats (or turf reinforcement mats), and concrete erosion control products.
Concrete erosion control is a popular method because of its longevity and effectiveness. However, depending on the option you choose, installation can be costly. Prefabricated concrete blocks in particular can be expensive to transport and requires much more manpower during installation.
The best alternative to conventional products such as rip-rap and gabions, HYDROTEX fabric-formed concrete mattresses are apt for erosion control and scour protection in a variety of markets and settings, including bridges and piers, landfills, dams, ports, and highways.
Is Permanent Erosion Control Better than Temporary Erosion Control?
Temporary erosion control measures such as wattles, silt fences, and silt socks are applicable only in limited environments.
For other cases, a permanent erosion control measure such as HYDROTEX is much more effective.
However, if you only need erosion control for the duration of the construction project, then a temporary solution might work best. Once installed, fabric-formed concrete is there to stay.

Do I Need Permanent Scour Protection?
Our HYDROTEX fabric-formed concrete mats are designed to be a permanent solution to scour in virtually any underwater environment.
Once installed, the mattresses stay in place, creating a long-standing solution to unwanted scour at bridges, piers, pipelines, ports, and dams.
Diagnosing scour issues can be difficult due to the underwater imaging technology required to take a look at the damage. Unlike soil erosion, scour can’t be seen with the naked eye.
However, if you are working at any river or port site where piers and bridges cross the water, then chances are scour protection will be a required component of your project.
Specific permanent scour protection applications include abutment scour protection, bridge pier scour protection, pipeline protection, prop scour protection, rubble mound structure foundations, and scour aprons.
Why Choose HYDROTEX for Scour Protection?
Prefabricated concrete blocks, A-jacks, rip rap, and other solutions can be difficult to install underwater and require intensive manpower for installation.
They can also be expensive to ship and difficult to obtain in certain areas, making them a less than ideal choice for projects in remote ports or construction sites without immediate highway accessibility.
Because HYDROTEX fabric-formed concrete is shipped as rolls of unpumped geotextile panels, HYDROTEX is cheaper and easier to obtain from the get-go. Ideal for underwater installations, a HYDROTEX panel simply needs to be rolled out in the prepared area and then pumped with fine aggregate concrete.
Other Permanent Erosion Prevention Solutions
HYDROTEX fabric-formed concrete is one of the most versatile erosion control products and can be used in a diverse range of applications, including coal ash liner protection, geomembrane protection, sediment capping and remediation, and tunnel closures (HYDROCAST product only).
The fabric-formed concrete mattresses can also be used for erosion control at detention ponds, cooling channels, and retention ponds.
