The Problem

An unlined canal is subject to bank erosion. The eroded bank encroaches upon the adjacent roadway, infrastructure, or valuable property, leading to catastrophic collapse.

A stormwater management or irrigation canal may also suffer from a reduced inefficiency of the components. Vegetation growth or bank erosion increases waterlogging and reduces waterflow.

Permanent Canal Lining to Prevent Seepage

Sometimes a canal needs to be lined on the sides and the bottom to protect against seepage and erosion. In those cases, a HYDROTEX fabric-formed concrete mat is the best choice.

With a diver’s help, the unpumped geosynthetic panel can be dragged across the riverbed. Once pumped with fine aggregate concrete, the mattress will naturally adjust to the soil.

The Better Alternative for Precast Concrete Canal Lining

Unlike pre-cast concrete blocks, HYDROTEX can be easily transported to and from the project site.

No matter how remote or how close the canal is to a major highway, you will have no trouble transporting the geosynthetic panels to the installation site.

Additionally, other lining alternatives such as brick, puddle clay, LDPE plastic, cement, earthen types, or asphalt offer only a temporary solution that requires upkeep or replacement within a few years. HYDROTEX, on the other hand, is permanent and maintenance-free. After installation, HYDROTEX fabric-formed concrete mattresses can last up to thirty years without any intervention.

No Concrete Lining Machine (or Paver) Needed

One of the principal benefits of HYDROTEX is how easy it is to install in rivers and canals.

Rather than needing a concrete paver for canal lining, all you need is a pair of divers to place the geosynthetic panels across the riverbed. You will also need a small team to pump the custom-manufactured mattresses with fine aggregate concrete.

Enviromat®

Enviromat® (EM) Concrete Linings


Enviromat Concrete Linings are installed to provide protection against periodic high flows. After installation, vegetation can be planted within the open structure of the lining to create a more natural appearance. Enviromat Concrete Linings are used in drainage ditches and on the upper slopes of channels, canals, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and other water courses as well as for embankments subject to heavy run-off.

Enviromat Linings are comprised of concrete-filled elements and unfilled areas that allow for the establishment of vegetation.  Once the concrete sets, the defined unfilled and interwoven areas are opened by cutting the fabric and are planted or are filled with topsoil and seeded.  Within a growing season a vegetated cover will normally extend over the lining, resulting in an erosion control system with the hydraulic, ecological and aesthetic features desired.

HYDROTEX® FilterBand®

FilterBand® (FB) Concrete Linings


FilterBand® (FB) Concrete Linings are similar to Filter Point, providing an effective and highly permeable concrete lining that resists erosive forces. FilterBand® differs from Filter Point in that the form creates interconnected, tubular concrete elements that are separated by large, interwoven filtration bands.  The filtration bands provide for greater reduction of uplift pressures than Filter Point Linings.  Also, the biaxial alignment of the tubular elements creates two directionally determined coefficients of hydraulic friction. As a result, FilterBand® achieves greater reduction of flow velocity or wave energy than Filter Point.

FilterBand® concrete linings are specified in situations similar to those for which Filter Point might be specified, which also require greater relief of uplift pressures, higher reduction of flow velocities, or greater reduction of wave run-up.

Uniform Section (US) Concrete Linings


Uniform Section (US) Concrete Linings are similar to traditional concrete slope paving.  They create a solid, high-quality concrete lining with a relatively low hydraulic resistance and uniform cross-section.  Uniform Section linings are used to reduce the infiltration or exfiltration of aggressive waste and chemical fluids into or out of open channels and basins.  They are also used to reduce exfiltration in arid regions where open channels and basins require watertight linings.

Uniform Section Concrete Linings are resistant to leachate and most chemicals.  They protect geosynthetic liners from mechanical damage, exposure to UV light, and freeze-thaw cycles.  These self-supporting, high-strength linings permit construction on steep side slopes and replace the conventional use of clay or sand as liner protection. Placement of the forms and concrete filling can be performed without the use of equipment on the liner.  The tensile strength and abrasion resistance of the fabric protect the liner from the pumped concrete.

Filter Point (FP) Concrete Linings


Filter Point Concrete Linings with filtration points (drains) provide erosion-resistant, permeable concrete linings for ditches, channels, canals, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, reservoirs, marinas, and protected port and harbor areas.

Filter Point Concrete Linings have a cobbled surface and a relatively high coefficient of hydraulic friction in order to achieve lower flow velocities and to reduce wave run-up. The filtration points provide for the relief of hydrostatic uplift pressures, increasing the system’s stability.

Filter Point Concrete Linings were the first type of fabric formed concrete system developed. In 1965, a Dutch patent was issued for “fabric formed slope paving.” The form suggested by this patent was later refined to create the first “filter point” lining.

This huge complex project was the first Public–Private Partnership in the state of Florida and the largest project in the history of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). This 10.5 mi design/build project included:

  • Reconstruction and widening of I-595 and SR-84
  • Construction of three reversible express lanes on the I-595 median
  • Reconstruction and widening of 2.8 mi of Florida’s Turnpike
  • 53 new bridges
  • Bridge and interchange reconstruction
  • Seven braided ramps to avoid traffic weaving
  • 29 entrance and exit ramps
  • 16000 linear ft of bulkhead for the widening of SR-84 along the NNR Canal

Synthetex was selected by both of Dragados’ subcontractors, Prince Contracting LLC and Ranger Construction Industries, Inc., for the supply of more than 900,000 ft² of the specified articulating block and filter point fabric forms.
